They’re still taking the wrapping off of Macworld/iWorld 2012, but we couldn’t resist heading down to Moscone Center to get a sneak peek at what this year’s show has in store.

We think the secret to Macworld’s power is hidden in this cryptic sign. Because when we dare take its picture, no less than three guards are called over to manage the security breach.

Sometimes it feels like the whole world has turned into a Portlandia sketch, the one where Carrie Brownstein and Fred Armisen are cajoled by everyone (the bank teller, a garbage man, and even Carrie’s mom) to “come to my DJ night.” But all jokes aside, as a music fan, more DJs is a good thing. The more DJs there are, the less likely I am to hear the same old “untz-untz-untz” when I head out to my neighborhood bar. But learning how to DJ is quite daunting—the gear can be expensive and complicated, not to mention wickedly heavy. Stanton’s SCS.4DJ changes all that.

BARtab: Cocktails, Anyone

While the Castro has no shortage of bars, lately we’ve earned more of a reputation for bottomless mimosas (and the drunk-and-crying over-indulgers they leave scattered across the sidewalk) than for finely-crafted libations. Don’t get me wrong, there will always be a place for the quick and dirty Jack and Coke in this town. But thankfully, for cocktail geeks and other alcohol enthusiasts, there are plenty of careful, handcrafted drinks to be had.

Like the times, music keeps a-changin’. These days, it’s more often enjoyed on the go from your iDevice, rather than by dusting off a CD or (gasp) record. That’s part of why Apple’s AirPlay feature, which lets you beam tunes from iDevices to compatible speakers, gets us so excited…but there’s actually a better option, if you can afford it. Sonos’ line of wireless music players can send your tunes on tour all over the house, and they offer more power and flexibility.

How To Erase a Mac Hard Drive

Is there any way to completely erase the hard drive on the MacBook Pro?

Sometimes you just need to clear the decks and start from scratch. If you’re giving away an old Mac or just want a do-over, fire up Disk Utility. Zapping an entire disk is simple to do. From Applications > Utilities, open the Disk Utility application. Click on a mounted drive in the left-hand column, and select the Erase tab. But be careful when erasing disks. It probably goes without saying, but erasing a disk will remove everything on it. If you want to erase the disk that contains your current operating system, you’ll have to boot from another volume first, like an external drive or the Install Disc that came with your Mac.
